The FCCS

Who We Are

The Farmers Central Cooperative Society Ltd. (F.C.C.S), a part of Koperattivi Malta, originates in the Zabbar Farmers’ Cooperative of 1947, the first cooperative in Malta, formed to address post-WWII food scarcity.  Other farming cooperatives soon followed, uniting to form the F.C.C.S, which aimed to streamline the buying and selling of agricultural products.

Today, the F.C.C.S operates from the Pitkalija Market in Ta’ Qali, employs over 36 people, supports 800 active farmers, and has an annual turnover of up to twelve million euros.  The cooperative is committed to future-proofing its operations and investing in land, buildings, machinery, and technology.  It participates in EU research projects, focusing on sustainable farming practices and environmental challenges.  The cooperative encourages its members to engage in research projects and adopt modern farming practices.
Despite challenges, the F.C.C.S continues to support its members and serve the public.  The cooperative also focuses on community education through media interviews and educational outings.  The FCCS is vital in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and rural development.  As a farmer-owned cooperative, it provides economic opportunities for small farms while minimising environmental impacts.  FCCS helps small farmers access markets and leverage better prices for their produce.  By aggregating members’ outputs, cooperatives can fulfil large-scale supply contracts that individual farms could not meet on their own.  This market access allows farmers to negotiate higher and fairer prices from buyers.  FCCS also provides a shared infrastructure for member farms.  By pooling resources, the FCCS enables access to new technologies, financing options and information networks.  This allows member farms to boost productivity and incomes in a sustainable manner.  The Cooperative promotes stewardship of land and natural resources.  Their extension services encourage sustainable practices like organic farming, wastewater treatment, soil health management and renewable energy adoption.  Focused on community welfare, the FCCS creates awareness about biodiversity conservation, watersheds and green cover.
