Importance of Farming

This is a basic text element.aThe importance of Maltese farmers in agriculture cannot be understated.  They are the industry’s backbone, producing food and other crops.  Local farmers play a vital role in ensuring food security and are essential to the economy.
Food security is vital to Malta, and local farmers are critical to the rural conservation, restoration and preservation of the local ecosystem.  The government works on achieving resource efficiency and improving the farm sector's competitiveness, which has been shaped by the European Union context and has reshaped the archipelago's agricultural sector.
The Agricultural Policy for the Maltese Islands aims to increase the competitiveness of active farmers and livestock breeders by focusing on quality and encouraging diversification.  The policy aims to facilitate the entry of young farmers by creating a cost-effective agri-business sector that fosters sustainable farming activities by adapting to the local geo-climatic conditions and ensuring that genuine farmers manage farmland for agricultural purposes and related activities.

Agriculture in Malta

Over the centuries, Malta has been ruled by various nations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and the British.  Each nation has left its mark on Maltese agriculture, introducing new crops, techniques, and technologies.  Agriculture in Malta faces significant challenges due to the country's small size and geography.  Farmers have adapted and adopted innovative practices despite these obstacles to maintain a productive agricultural sector.  Malta’s agriculture is characterised by diverse crops throughout the year, with certain harvests being more prominent during specific seasons.  Malta’s agricultural sector is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its farmers, who have found ways to thrive despite the challenges posed by the country's small size and geography.  Today, agriculture in Malta is facing many challenges, including a shortage of arable land, water scarcity, and competition from cheaper imports.  However, despite these challenges, agriculture continues to play a vital role in Malta's economy and society.
